Stefan Salvatore has moved to Manhattan to try to start over. But one night while walking through the park, Stefan discovers a girl who has been badly stabbed and is dying. He manages to save her and returns her home to her wealthy family. The family invites him to stay with them, but Stefan is hesitant to do so but finally agrees. One evening while escorting the young lady to a society ball, he runs into someone from his past that he never expected to see again. Stefan's brother forces him to marry the sister of his bride, or else he will kill the whole family. Later, the brothers are forced to flee after a horrific tragedy. What will happen when another vampire shows up, and what grudge does he hold against the Salvatore brothers?
I loved reading the prequel to The Vampire Diaries and learning the back story of Damon and Stefan's tumultuous history. It introduces characters that will come to play a role in the ongoing series. There were lots of unexpected twists, and you will be unable to set this book down. This is a must read for all fans of The Vampire Diaries or anyone who loves a dark and bloody vampire story.
