"REN: Awakened" starts out a very interesting young adult paranormal series. The main character is pretty much a loaner and people see her as being weird and psychiatric. I liked her as she was different than so many other teen characters. She's an orphan and even the one person she thought she could trust betrayers her... in her mind. One night she's broken out of her psychiatric hospital and from there the real journey to finding herself begins. I enjoyed how the author had the story moving at a great pace. With the help of two people similar to her she learns she's not really human. She's on Earth serving a higher purpose. Can REN save the world?
This first book takes up on a journey across the United States of America as Ren and her "friends" are on a road trip to a place where her powers are needed. She's up again true evil. This journey takes her in the direction she needs to go and gives her time to grown in her powers and learn about who she is and why she has no prior memories. She's been spinning through time, reborn and died so many times. But this time, she has no memories of the past. As time goes on she gets glimpses of the past.
I enjoyed the depth of plot in this story and how there is more to be told. But in this story you do get enough to feel satisfied as you go in search of book two.
This book is for those readers wanting to take an adventure and explore something new in the paranormal ya genre. I've not read anything else like this.
There was one part that I felt seemed off. With heinous evil chasing them down the friends allow Ren to take the car out and into town on her own... no backup. It just seemed stupid for her to do something so stupid. It was a bit like a horror movie when you know a characters is going to get themselves killed. In any other story she would have been dead... again.
Next up: "REN: Reposed"
Seventeen-year-old Ren Nagel knows that the strange things she's seen are real--even if no one else believes her. But, when she's locked up in a psychiatric hospital; she loses hope that anyone will ever truly be on her side.
Then everything changes. With the help of a new friend, Ren breaks out. It's when she's on the run that she learns who she really is. Hunted by evil, Ren must learn to control a power she never knew she had, organize a coalition of people she never knew existed, and remind humanity why fighting the darkness is a big part of being human. Sometimes, feeling different is much more than just a feeling. For Ren, it means the fate of the world.
