When I first saw the cover of Halflings, by Heather Burch, I knew I needed to read it. Right from the start the deep and vivid colors grabbed me. When I got my hands on a review copy, I was ecstatic. I’d seen some varying reviews, so I was eager to see how I would react to Burch’s story. Unfortunately, this book will not be on any of my favorite lists. It was just an okay to average read. Been there; and seen that; but, what was new and exciting? Burch’s storytelling is great. Right from the first few words I was taken in by the action and intensity. It starts off with main character, Nikki, being chased by four hell-hounds. Say what? THAT was fun, and new, and exciting. The concept of Halflings is rather fascinating. Burch took a chance when she penned a book that talks a lot about heaven, hell, God, and angels. Most people flinch when any one of these topics is brought up, so I commend Burch for daring to write a book that morphed all of these into one book. Some of the storytelling was slightly longwinded and drawn out. At times, I found myself getting bored with the story and wishing for some more action. Other times? I was happy and smitten with the Lost Boys. The Lost Boys are a great addition, and something that was fun to read. The boys: Raven, Mace, and Vine are Halflings. They’re the offspring of fallen angels and human women. The boys were sent to Earth to protect Nikki. Protect her from what? Well….. everyone will have to read to find out. From angels to love triangles, Halflings kept me interested, and most importantly invested. If it weren’t for the forbidden love aspect, I may have checked out after the beginning. However, I’m a sucker for love and romance. I’m a BIG sucker if one of the love interests is a bad boy with a potentially soft heart. Count me in for some more! Overall, Halflings wasn’t what I had hoped it would be. I wanted more from the storytelling and pacing, but I did like it enough to recommend.
